I have always been interested in Asperger's Syndrome - there is so much that we still don't know about it. It is interesting that this disorder affects such a limited (but important) part of human interaction -- social development -- and to teach one to operate without this instinct (some might call it a survival skill) seems like it would be truly rewarding.

I am interested in Asperger's Syndrome because in an inclusive classroom, I believe it will be more common to teach a student with Asperger's. Since social interactions are harder for students with Asperger's, I wanted to learn about how I can make my classroom as comfortable as possible for a student with Asperger's.

I was drawn to study Asperger's Syndrome as I have a family member who has Asperger's. This led to my initial curiosity, and I have come to know something about it, but only really in terms of my son. As a teacher, I would like to be able to work as effectively as possible with the large and varied population of different students with Asperger's. I have personally seen the difference that skilled and caring educators can make in the lives of students with Asperger's Syndrome, and I would like to aspire to be one of those people.

I chose to study Asperger's Syndrome because I worked with a girl who has Asperger's at my job at the YMCA and I wanted to learn how we could work together more successfully. She does not speak, so communication was our initial barrier. Beyond that though, I want to know how we can learn from each other, and I think that the first step is for me to learn more about Asperger's.
